Solar Projects Super-Size
When it comes to new solar installations, it seems bigger is better.
Last year, developers commissioned a record 35 solar projects of at least 200 megawatts each around the world. That is an increase of about 17 percent from the prior year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg Green.
For some perspective, a 200-MW installation is about the size of 550 football fields.
Bloomberg credits the falling cost of solar technology, coupled by investors who are excited by renewables. Large projects also provide economies of scale that appeals to developers. “The economics are just brutal on a small plant these days,” Tom Buttgenbach, president and chief executive officer of 8minute Solar Energy, told Bloomberg.
These mega installations tend to be built in relatively remote areas, such as this $1 billion project underway in California.
